Il fut le théâtre de sanglants combats. Au XIVème siècle, Montpoupon passe aux mains des seigneurs de Prie et de Buzançais. Antoine de Prie et sa femme, Madeleine d'Amboise, reconstruirent le château en 1460. Ils le transformèrent en une demeure de style Renaissance En 1857 Jean-Baptiste de la Motte Saint Pierre, arrière grand père de l'actuelle propriétaire, acheta le château. La famille fit des travaux extérieurs (fin XIXème) et intérieur (1920) afin de redonner à Montpoupon l'aspect Renaissance qu'il présente aujourd'hui.
