Antoine de Prie et sa femme, Madeleine d'Amboise, reconstruirent le château en 1460. Ils le transformèrent en une demeure de style Renaissance En 1857 Jean-Baptiste de la Motte Saint Pierre, arrière grand père de l'actuelle propriétaire, acheta le château. La famille fit des travaux extérieurs (fin XIXème) et intérieur (1920) afin de redonner à Montpoupon l'aspect Renaissance qu'il présente aujourd'hui.
