When the Bristol Gas and Electric Company was purchased in 1910 the new owners donated this advertising sign. The “Mammoth Electric Sign”, measuring 60’ wide by 35’ high, was shipped by rail and dedicated on July 4 to a crowd of over 3,000 citizens. For its first five years it was perched on the top of The Interstate Hardware building until it was removed in 1915 to its present location over State Street. The original slogan read, “Push, That’s Bristol”, which was the mantra for the era’s industrial “push” that centered in Bristol. In 1921 the polish of the sign had diminished Bristol’s marketing icon when its lights would flicker “PU” That’s Bristol or “SH” that’s Bristol, and a citywide campaign chose its current slogan. In 1988 it was accepted to the National Register of Historical Places.
In 2010 this enormous structure, the Bristol Slogan Sign, marked its 100th year on the eastern end of downtown Bristol, itself straddling State Street. It has been a part of community pride and the one structure in the city that has identified Bristol’s common purpose and heritage. The message on this sign has been the marketing slogan for the city for close to 90 of those years, and considered one of the oldest community slogans in the United States. It reads, “Bristol Va – Tenn, A Good Place To Live”.
