You’re finally doing it. You’re taking a vacation to a far-flung land that’s been on your bucket list for a long time. It’s unique and different and exciting. But before you go, there are a few things you should do. Follow along below for our best safety tips for traveling abroad.
Learn the Language
You don’t need to become fluent in Portuguese, French, and conversant in some Spanish. But brushing up on the local dialect of a distant destination never hurt. Even learning basics like hello, goodbye, thank you, and please can go a long way in a foreign land. There’s more than enough educational material out there to set you on a course for becoming multilingual. And since we’re in the 21st century, there’s tons of language apps you can download on your mobile phone to help you get started.
Know the Law
This may come as a shock to some, but not all of our laws extend beyond our borders. For instance, certain public displays of affection in the United Arab Emirates can lead to a jail sentence. And chewing gum on public transit in Singapore could cost you quite a few Singapore dollars in fees. Read up on the laws and follow the local customs. Remember this: If you’re not sure, it’s probably best not to do it.
Consider Travelers Insurance
It doesn’t matter whether you’re going for a week or six months, getting yourself protected with solid travelers insurance is a must-do. Why? Because if something unfortunate should happen like you getting sick or injured, the insurance can help you get out of the country and back home as soon as possible. A good one to consider is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) that’s run by the U.S. State Department.
Withdraw Money from Banks
There’s several reasons for getting your cash from banks and bank ATMs. For one, the money conversion counters at airports are sometimes more expensive. Bank ATM fees aren’t usually as high, and the conversion will almost certainly be exact. Plus, it’s a good idea to always have some cash at hand.
Make a Copy of Your Passport
This is one of the easiest things to do to avoid misplacing your passport and any other important documents. Once you arrive in your destination, instead of wandering about with your documents in tow, carry photocopy prints of them. Most hotels and hostels will accept a copy of your passport as a valid form of identification.
Use Registered Taxis
Avoid taking private taxis. They aren’t always regulated by any governing body and could overcharge you. Instead, stick with licensed, metered taxis. Check your host city’s website for a full list of cab companies that are registered with that city. Last thing you need is to get dropped off in the wrong neighborhood with a whopping cab fare!
