No more than thirty-five minutes from Wailea rests The Mill House in Waikapu Valley—an award-winning restaurant tucked onto the grounds of the Maui Tropical Plantation. A restaurant? you might say—and to which we’d reply, this is no ordinary venue. Situated next to a duck pond and peering out upon verdant crops, part of The Mill House’s aim is to preserve Maui’s past—particularly in terms of the role that plantations played. To that end, its horseshoe bar is bookended by locomotives from the 19th century, while pieces of Maui’s last sugarcane mills—from fly wheels to photographs—welcome diners to its grounds.
