Shepaug river waterfall Roxbury Connecticut

This was a really nice surprise-it's more then a hiking trail, it's a historical 19th century iron mine site. Not far from the parking lot, is the location of where the mine used to be-pictured are the roasting ovens. There is also a large furnace and several signs to learn about the mine and what the town used to look like in 1874. The trail goes along the old Donkey Trail that was used to bring rock down from the quarry. There are two main trails-about 6 miles total (3.5 miles for the Mine Hill Preserve and 2 mile loop for the Carter Preserve). There are also several miles of tunnels that are no longer accessible and are gated off with Bat Cages to allow bats to get in and out of the caves. An old airfield that was part of the Roxbury Airport. Some beautiful planes left behind as well..
