Hantangang River Geopark is the first geopark in Korea to be formed around a river and includes the Hantangang River, which originates in Pyeonggang-gun, Gangwon-do, North Korea, and the confluence of the Imjin River located downstream. The current Hantangang River and some parts of the Imjin River were formed by a volcanic eruption about 500,000 to 130,000 years ago, and the lava that flowed at that time created a variety of beautiful terrains and landscapes, such as basalt cliffs, columnar joints, and waterfalls. On July 7, 2020, the Hantangang River was certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark by the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, France.
Goseokjeong Pavilion
  • 1h
  • Admission ticket included
Goseokjeong Goseok is a granite rock about 15m high in the Hantangang Valley. A pavilion called Goseokjeong is nearby, and the valley in the area is also called Goseokjeong.
JaeIn Waterfall
  • 1h
  • Admission ticket included
Jaein Falls has long been known as a scenic spot. Jaein Falls is a spectacular sight, with a small stream flowing down from Jijangbong Peak in the north and pouring down a basalt columnar joint cliff about 18 meters high. l. At Jaein Falls, you can observe various basalt characteristics, including columnar jointing, erosion caves, potholes, and gas tubes. The waterfall, which is about 18 meters high, continuously eroded the area below the waterfall, creating a pothole that is 5 meters deep. A pothole is a deep hole formed when a vortex (a phenomenon in which water swirls around) occurs in a concave or broken part of a rock in a stream.
Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site
  • 1h
  • Admission ticket included
The Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site was first discovered in 1978 along the banks of the Hantangang River by Greg Bowen, a US soldier stationed in Dongducheon. Upon his discovery, Bowen sent a report on the stone tool to Professor Francois Bordes, a renowned French prehistoric archeologist, who then introduced to Bowen Professor WongRyong Kim, then the Seoul National University Museum curator. Thus, the stone tools discovered near the riverbank were reported to Professor WongRyong Kim. Professor Young Wha Chung from Yeungnam University reported the stone tools to academia as an Acheulean-like hand axe. Today, the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site is on the southern side of Jeongok-eup, on a basaltic plateau encircled by the Hantangang River. Excavations at the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site began the year following the site’s discovery, and the same year, the site was designated as National Historic Site No. 268 (778,296㎡).
