Embark on a 5- to 6-hour hike to the summit of Piton de la Fournaise on Réunion Island, one of the world's most active volcanoes!
Piton de la Fournaise, an iconic landmark of Réunion, rises to a height of 8,639 feet (2,632 meters) and overlooks the island's southern plains. Formed on the southeastern flank of Piton des Neiges, it is a volcano known for its fairly frequent eruptions. The goal of this 5- to 6-hour hike is to reach the summit of Piton de la Fournaise, getting off the beaten track and venturing off the marked trail!
Throughout this hike to Piton de la Fournaise, you will discover a moonscape with an otherworldly feel that exudes incredible power and is well worth the journey. Once you reach the top of the volcano, you will be able to admire the Dolomieu Crater, one of the two volcanic craters located at the summit of Piton de la Fournaise, along with the Bory Crater. It collapsed during the April 2007 eruption and measures one kilometer long by 750 meters wide, with a depth of approximately 350 meters.
Throughout the hike to the volcano, you will hear commentary from your state-certified mountain guide, who will help you learn more about the unique characteristics of this captivating place.

Itinerary
Meet your guide in front of the Volcano Museum in Bourg-Murat
Departure by car (your vehicle) towards the volcano, with a few stops along the way to learn about certain types of landscapes
Upon arriving at Pas de Bellecombe, the exploration continues on foot: you will pass through areas of corded lava followed by areas of clinker lava, and your guide will explain Piton de la Fournaise to you.
After a long climb, you will reach the summit of Piton de la Fournaise, from where you can admire the Dolomieu Crater and enjoy a picnic.
In the afternoon, you will descend the slopes of the volcano to return to your starting point.
