What you can expect
Begin your tour by heading to the slopes at Motomachi, where 19 sloping streets run straight to the port. Stroll along these streets and admire the distinct buildings and varied landscapes.
Next, visit the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, a notable historic building designated as an important cultural property. Explore its magnificent main hall and rooms reserved for special guests.
Continue to the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, a typical tourist facility in Hakodate. These brick warehouses, built in 1909, have been totally renovated and now house about 50 restaurants and souvenir stores.
Then, head to Hakodate-Meijikan, a stately red-brick building built as Hakodate Post Office in 1911. Now a shopping mall, you can try your hand at making a music box here.
Next, visit the Hakodate Orthodox Church, founded in 1859 by the Russian Consulate. The existing building, built in 1916, is known as a representation of western-style buildings in Hakodate and has been designated as an important cultural property.
Continue to the Motomachi Roman Catholic Church, founded in 1877. The existing building was rebuilt in 1923, and the magnificent altar in the cathedral was sent from the pope.
Finally, visit the Hakodate St. John’s Church, founded by an English priest who visited Hakodate in 1874. The existing building, completed in 1979, features an impressive cross-shaped roof.
