Step into history at the Canne della Battaglia Archaeological Park, the legendary site where one of the most decisive battles of antiquity took place. During the Battle of Cannae (216 BC), in the Second Punic War, Hannibal achieved a stunning victory over the Roman legions through a brilliant encirclement strategy that forever changed military history.

Your guided experience begins at the Antiquarium Museum, where history comes alive through a rich collection of Roman, medieval, and pre-Roman artifacts. Discover amphorae, finely crafted bronze and iron armor, and geometric pottery created by the ancient Daunian and Peucetian populations. Many of these objects come directly from the nearby necropolis, offering a unique insight into burial rituals and daily life between the 3rd and 4th century BC.

Continue your journey through the necropolis of Canne, a vast funerary area used over many centuries. Tombs of different periods reveal the long continuity of human presence in this strategic landscape, shaped by war, trade, and settlement. The site preserves a powerful atmosphere where archaeology and memory blend together.

The tour then moves into the open-air archaeological excavations, where you can walk among the remains of the ancient settlement. Here, you will see the foundations of Roman buildings, ancient road layouts, and public and private structures that help reconstruct the original urban organization of Canne.

From there, the route leads to the medieval castle ruins, strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Ofanto Valley. Although partially preserved today, the remaining defensive walls and structures highlight its historical role as a military outpost controlling the surrounding territory long after the Roman era.

The experience concludes at the early Christian Basilica of Saint Leucio, one of the most important religious complexes of the area. Built with a three-nave structure and a semicircular apse, the basilica still preserves fragments of its ancient mosaic flooring and architectural elements that reflect its significance during the late antique and early medieval periods.
