The great crested grebe was hunted for its ornate head plumes, leading to near extinction, but there are now again about 9,400 breeding pairs and 19,140 wintering birds in the UK; they can be found at lowland lakes, gravel pits, reservoirs and rivers and, during the winter months, along the coast.
