Rooms were recently renovated, but they kept the historical feel. Stepping into the lobby felt like going back in time with their impeccable conservation of original elements. Super charming and great location to explore all the great hiking spots around!

Quick getaway from Los Angeles, only 3 hours from silver lake. We were in the area leisurely scouting film shoot locations and stumbled upon this hotel rather late into the evening. Comfy bed, clean room, hot shower, and a simple breakfast. The lobby is stunning. This hotel has so much history and charm. Oh, and a great little ice cream shop next door! Staff was pleasant and provided some notable recs during our stay. We spent the next day hiking Onion Valley, and touring the museum of Eastern California, only a couple blocks from the hotel + the native plant garden, truly an oasis. We’ll be staying again. A highly accessible must do for LA folks looking for an authentic mountain escape.

1925 hotel with a wonderful charm and history. The rooms are clean with new beds paint and new bathrooms. The hotel is in restoration mode but closely done. Can't wait to come here again and see again. Kim was our hotel host. Amazing.

The room itself was extremely clean and the hotel was charming. Breakfast was very simple - coffee, granola and milk, fruit, toast and jam - but it was $8 so about right. I wish there were more amenities available. There was no ice, no refrigerator or microwave in room, no hair dryer available at desk or in room. They're obviously recently renovated and working their way up. So for the price point you get a nice place to stay, but don't expect a 3 star hotel.

While there is hope for this historic property, we really didn't enjoy our stay. The bed was comfortable, and the air conditioning in our room worked well. Unfortunately, those were the room's only real strengths. The lighting was so dim that it was impossible to read. While we didn't mind that there wasn't a television, brighter lighting would have made the room much more functional. Storage was also extremely limited, with only three hangers on a hall rack, making it difficult to unpack or organize our belongings. The lobby is beautiful and was by far the highlight of the hotel. However, on a very hot day, the air conditioning wasn't strong enough to make it a comfortable place to relax or enjoy a meal. The complimentary continental breakfast was pleasant but could have been improved. Both the milk and coffee creamer ran out, and a few pastries or a better selection of fresh fruit would have made a significant difference. Although this isn't the hotel's fault, travelers should be aware that there are essentially no dining options in Independence. The only choices were a couple of food trucks that required eating outdoors in 110-degree temperatures. We ended up buying cheese and crackers at a gas station convenience store for dinner.

What a gem! Very well restored, respecting the original character, peaceful and warm. Enjoy the comfortable seating of the welcoming common area or just sink into the high quality bedding and enjoy the views of the snow tipped Sierras. Ask about the unique suite with the soaking tub! Cody is helpful and knowledgable about this small town, it's history and attractions. Highly recommend!

This is a historical hotel and it is VERY cool, the rooms are great, amazing AC, very nicely repainted in such nice colors, the whole place is just really neat, there are no TVs in the rooms which I liked, it was like a time machine, sit down and read something instead of the TV, such a refreshing change, they did have wifi which was nice, the lobby was very nice and I highly recommend this lovely historical hotel.

We stayed here for 1 night. Felt secure enough with our 8 year old. We did see a massive cockroach in the bathroom. No TV, no problem we had phones and tablets. Great shower pressure. Lotion, shampoo, body wash, and conditioner good quality. The door code method they have makes it super easy to check in and come and go as you please. Bed was comfy. Pillows too thick.

I stayed in the newly renovated Winnedumah for a week of work in the Owens Valley. It's a charming, historical hotel with a gorgeous lobby and comfy rooms. I was there during a particularly sweltering week in June, but luckily the room had AC that was both quiet and powerful, and a very comfortable bed. The new owners were lovely and welcoming, and it's clear that they are treating this hotel as an investment in the Eastern Sierras community. Before I got to Independence, I stayed in a travel motel in Bishop for around the same price, but the experience at Winnedumah was exponentially better, as it was far more peaceful and scenic. Being so close to Mt. Whitney and the Sierra range, it even felt a bit like staying at a historical lodge in Yosemite. My only recommendation is a very minor one--for the bathrooms to have a small shelf or stand for toiletries. But otherwise, my stay there was wonderful, and I can't wait to return this fall. Would absolutely recommend.

The owners are renovating it to hopefully return it to its former glory. It is a work in progress. Certain expected amenities in the room were not there m, yet. This includes a room television and places like drawers and closets for your clothes.
