Liked the fact it was next to the Abbey and being able to visit outside of normal hours. The building is beautiful but lacks the facilities one would expect from a 4* hotel. No bar, no fridge, water or tea/coffee making facilities in room. Our TV and in-room telephone did not work and it took them 3 visits to fix it (and it went on the blink again the next day). Car parking is far from the hotel although they pick up your luggage in a golf cart. Noticed a lot of cars parked closer (luxury cars) but staff dismissive when I asked about it. My main tips would be - don't expect any service - it is practically non-existent. There is no bar and nowhere to eat. As opposed to what it says on their website, the Panier de l'ermite must be booked days in advance instead of at reception the same day. We had no choice at all and were given cold carrot soup, a cold poached (on the raw side) egg on a bed of cold vegetables in a broth and a piece of bread with compote on top for dessert - grudgingly. I was surprised they actually came to pick up the basket when we called. Go for garden room as these are air conditioned. They put us in Room 5 which has no shade on the terrace even though we arrived before the guests in Room 4 which does - maybe because we booked through Expedia instead of direct? The weirdly shaped metal chairs are very uncomfortable and there's no seating or table in the room (there is a bedside ledge which is just about large enough for one glass). Staff can be surly.

The room in Fontevraud L'Ermitage was pleasant, it was clean and the beds were good. Perfect for 2 or 3 nights. The room was quite warm in August, there were fans but they made little difference. We also missed having a seat. We were with 4 people, so sometimes we had to wait for each other. Don’t go for the breakfast, the selection is very limited and we found it very disappointing for the price.

A fabulous hotel. What a privilege to be able to stay in Fontevraud-l’Abbaye Abbey. The ability to walk around after the public has gone up to 12.30 at night was amazing! The room was clean and comfortable and the hotel was beautiful. Take time to go to the restaurant in the Cloisters. Such an experience . Very highly recommend

Amazing stay

My husband and I stayed at Fontevraud Abbey for a night and it was honestly the highlight of our France trip. There is a light show next week and they were practicing which was great that we got a free preview of it! Plus we hadn't realised we get to view the abbey until midnight and the next day as included in the price of our hotel stay. The bar and food service was also great. The only thing I would say is that we weren't notified that the bar closed at 10 and we did manage to thankfully get 1 drink from the front desk staff at 10.30-ish but I know several people did not know about this closing time. But overall would absolutely recommend staying at this hotel!

The setting is quite spectacular and the hotel rooms are stylish if a little small. Unfortunately, my husband accidentally, kicked his glasses under the bed and when we tried to retrieve them saw that cleaning under the bed is not a priority. A lot of dust etc. Otherwise the room was spotless. I had also emailed the hotel a few days before asking if we could eat in the restaurant. They only told me on arrival that it was fully booked until October. It would have been helpful to have known in advance. We took the option of a ‘picnic hamper’ which was disappointing to say the least. The breakfast was slightly underwhelming. A nice selection of items from local producers but luke warm coffee out of a thermos jug is not what I would expect from a hotel of this standard. I think they could serve a pot of coffee or tea at the table without too much trouble. The reception staff were extremely pleasant and helpful I must say.

After visiting the abbey numerous times over the years we finally got to stay, we arrived to find that the room we booked was not available due to the heat but we were being upgraded, not too sure what the upgrade was as the room was a lot smaller than the booked room with less beds, maybe the upgrade was a window that opens, the decor of the room looked dated and worn, the included after hours entry to the abbey was a let down as I was expecting a peaceful walk around at twighlight only to find masses of speakers blasting music each area had their own soundtrack but you could hear the other areas mixing in with it.
