This really isnt a typical hotel. This is more of a hotel that people live in. The atmosphere was quaint. The room was large. The bathroom was something. I think they turned a closet into a bathroom. You have to step over the toilet to get into the shower. No daily housekeeping. There are only certain days where you can request clean linen and towels. I work on the road alot so i cook in my room in a crockpot or electric skillet, that was not allowed. I have alot of dietary restrictions that make it hard to eat out all the time. There is not air conditioning adjustment in the room. I assume building is set to a certain temperature. There is a mission less than a block from hotel so a lot of the unhoused population. On a good note though. I never felt unsafe and walked around the neighborhood. There is a great breakfast lunch diner right across the street. A casino less than a 5 minute walk, also with some nice food choices. The price was decent and the beds were comfortable.

I have never been so misled like the Canfield Hotel. There were street people laying around the corner. There was a man with two black eyes, cut across his cheek, filthy dirty smoking a cigarette right outside the door. I didn't even want to touch door handle it was so dirty. Inside it smelled awful and dirty. We were especially hesitant when we were told to watch our step to get in elevator as it was broken & wasn't even with floor. We took the room key, went outside in shock and agreed it would be the last place on earth to stay. We did not feel safe!! It looked like something from a horror movie or to be rented by the hour. Gave the key back and went to Galena, Illinois and got a room there. Our room rented through Expedia was a joke but, not funny!! I will now try to get refund.

Solid Historic Hotel

It's an old hotel with a lot of history in a very solid location to explore Dubuque. Great value for the cost. Probably wouldn't bring my family here, but would stay solo again without a doubt.

It was nice and convenient for an event at the cathedral. Cute old-timey downtown hotel with lots of room. Super friendly staff helped me with finding a hair dryer when I forgot mine at home.

Staying here was like stepping back in time to the “50’s”! The location is great. One block from Diamond Jo and restaurants and bars downtown. If you stay on Saturday night, the Rainbow bar is a must! Will definitely stay there again!

We absolutely loved it! Yes, it's a bit older but the room decor was whimsical and fun. The room was clean, staff was excellent and polite every time we needed extra towels and bed sheets. Will definitely book again!!

Check-in was easy and quick. Our room was simple, yet clean and sufficient for the very affordable rate. We enjoyed the karoake at the large bar on Saturday night. Good location within walking distance of entertainment, food, etc.

Didn't catch the name of the lady who checked us in, but she was very nice and we appreciated all her suggestions for things to do in the area. Room was very clean with the exception of the bathroom. It had a used towel hanging on ghe back of the door and there was hair on the bath tub drain.

A night at the Canfield

Well, we knew it was an old historic hotel preserved in time like a time capsule. Retro furnishings from the 60s and 70s and quirky. We knew it wasn't a Hilton, and that was fine with us. For the price you can't beat it. Lots of places to eat and chill right around the hotel. Expectations are everything, and we weren't expecting much, but for a place to sleep it was fine. Lots of character if you like that old quirky throwback stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Bed was comfy, large room, fridge, micro, basic. And that's all we expected. I like high end hotels, Hilton was booked, but this was just fine.

It works in a pinch

Thought we would give it a shot since our regular hotel was booked and we wanted walking distance downtown. Check in easy. Very old place. Im ok with it be old but clean is comfortable is a must, unfortunately this wasn’t. It did the job for 2 night but had to transfer after for last night so that I could sleep.

Elevator was broken BUT I was alerted & told I could cancel my reservation w/o any penalty. I stayed anyway (a couple flights of stairs was good exercize). TV did not work properly in my initial room BUT was given a better room with a good TV. Staff did their best so I will use Canfield again next time I stay in Dbq. [I've stayed in Hiltons & Hyatt's that have also had 'things' break down. What's important is how staff responds!]

Location, accessibility and parking were fine. Nothing fancy, but everything was clean and adequate. Price was good. My main complaint was the inability to do anything about my room temp. I was told that heaters were not allowed. The clerk said he could get me an extra blanket..... he never even did that. That whole "customer service" thing seemed to be lost on the ol' fella. Disappointing...

Renter beware

You get what you pay for… Room itself was big and ok for comfort… I was a bit chilled and asked where the heat controls were in the room… There is none! Only one downstairs for the whole building… No shower curtain! It is some sort of plastic rolling whatever it sticks out into the shower giving you less room. Bath towels were 1980s size so I thought I would use two of them, there was only one!

Room was clean but decorated from something out of a 70s TV sitcom. Room was spacious. Bathroom was the smallest thing I have experienced when traveling. It looked like something that would be in a jail. Building is dark, older building. Smells of smoke. Elevator was interesting. You have to manually press the OPEN DOOR button when you get to your floor. It is close to dining and nightlife and it is cheap. It is a dive motel. Downtown Dubuque. Would not recommend for family travel.
