Who says you have to spend money to have fun in San Diego? Not us! When it comes to this coastal city, there are countless ways to soak it all up without reaching for your wallet.

No matter if you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll find free things to do in San Diego wherever you look. Round up your grandchildren for a movie in the park, or stake out a swatch of sand for an unforgettable day at the beach. From live music and history lessons to museum exhibits and nature, it’s easy to enjoy SoCal on a budget. 

Day at the Beach: Various Beaches

Free beaches in San Diego? Yes, please! You won’t have to remember to have cash on hand when you spend the day at one of San Diego’s many coastlines, from Pacific Beach to La Jolla Shores. Take a hike along Torrey Pines State Beach, stroll along the boardwalk at Mission Bay, or roast marshmallows on the bonfire pits at Shelter Island Shoreline Park or Coronado Beach.

Twilight in the Park Summer Concerts: Balboa Park

Looking for a free concert in San Diego? You’re in luck! Every summer for the past 37 years, Balboa Park has hosted the Twilight Concert series. All summer long, you can catch concerts on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings on the Spreckels Organ Pavilion stage. Pack a picnic and lend your ear to all kinds of jams, from blues and funk to jazz and symphonies.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: Old Town

Explore some San Diego historical landmarks without spending a penny. In Old Town, you’ll come across historical attractions, including the Robinson-Rose House, the Seeley Stable Museum, the Mason Street School, and San Diego Sheriff’s Museum, among countless others. Discover the stories behind this Mexican pueblo and American settlement, and then take a hike around picturesque Presidio Park.

Summer Movies in the Park: Various Parks

During the summer months, it’s easy to find free movies in the park in San Diego. Every Friday and Saturday night, you’re invited to watch a family-friendly film under the stars at various parks all around town, from Golden Hill Park and Poway to Escondido and Carmel Mountain. Bring a lawn blanket and invite your grandkids along for the fun.

Residents Free Days at the Museums: Balboa Park

If you’re a San Diego resident, you can get into certain museums free of charge on Tuesdays. You’ll want to look at the Balboa Park free museum list, but for starters, the Fleet Science Center and San Diego Natural History Museum are free on the first Tuesday of the month, while the Museum of Photographic Arts and San Diego History Center are valid on the second Tuesday. Don’t forget your photo ID to provide proof of residency for free admission.

Waterfront Park: Downtown San Diego

Jumping into the ocean isn’t the only way to cool off in San Diego for free. San Diego’s Waterfront Park has play areas and interactive water fountains where you and your grandchildren can make a splash. Bring lunch and picnic with views of the harbor or mosey around the gardens and public art.
