Check-in was straightforward, and the room was clean and functional with basic amenities like coffee-making facilities and a warm shower. However, our stay was seriously disrupted by loud drilling and hammering starting around 08:15 right outside our window. The noise was so loud and went on for a couple of hours, making it impossible to get a restful lie-in. It’s likely this work has been going on for weeks before our stay, yet the hotel gave no warning or apology. This feels like a failure on the hotel’s part — guests should be informed about ongoing construction or work, especially if it affects their comfort so dramatically. A restful stay was completely ruined, and for that reason, I can only give 2/5.

We chose this property for it's location, right in the old part of York, which as fantastic. The room itself was noisy, over crowded with a few broken items. The sheets didn't fit the bed properly and kept coming off in the night making it quite uncomfortable.

Fun & friendly.

Our stay was brilliant the staff were fantastic & so friendly. I was unaware that there was on site free parking so I ended up paying but other than that it was an excellent stay.

In a nice spot town centre it was run down no bar open only on arrival couldn’t take the car out between 10.30 am and 15.00 pm very desolate and run down

One night stopover in York.

Wanted somewhere in the city centre with parking for a one night stay to basically sleep in. This was just the ticket. Clean and comfy, staff on arrival welcoming and friendly. Even though checkout was at 10.30 a.m. We were allowed to leave our car there until we left at teatime the following day. Secure free parking - brilliant.

My room was just above the outdoor garden at the back.It was very noisy at night and trying to get to sleep was very very difficult. I would not think about staying there again. The reason i booked was the price but next time i will pay a little bit extra to stay somewhere else that is a lot quieter. I would not recommend anybody to stay here.

You get what you pay for

The Watergate Inn is rooms above a pub. Excellently located in the centre of York, a close walk to anything in the city centre. The rooms are dated, however this is perfect example of getting what you pay for. It is much cheaper than other options in a similar location, and this is because it is a little worn and in need of some TLC. That being said, I slept well in a comfy bed with great heating so was nice and warm. The WiFi is not good and the pillows need replacing, but it was absolutely fine. It can be noisy, but in a city centre that should be expected. It is basic, but I would stay here again and did enjoy the experience.

Great location, GREAT. Very clean room. Check-in young lady(s) were very helpful. Pub staff and all staff were wonderful. Parking was about 2 blocks away in a multi-level public garage, not a big issue. Good WiFi. good hot water. Quiet room in rear. Walkable to all important city sites. Great micro-brewery a few doors down and great historic pub across the street. The room was VERY tiny, I believe a jail cell is most likely larger. Could use more electrical outlets. I enjoyed my stay and would return. Dan- USA

Fine, if you’re a sound sleeper!

About a half-hour walk from the railway station, in quite a nice little community area, away from the main tourist areas, the Watergate is a pub with rooms. It serves meals, but not, as yet, breakfast. The check-in details are incorrect – the mobile phone number belongs to the previous owner – but I gather this is being addressed. Pleasant staff. The room was dated, but all right nonetheless, except for the street noise from passing revellers which went on intermittently until about 4am causing me to have very broken sleep each night. Near the Red Lion – an excellent pub if you like good beer.

The hotel is located across from a shisa lounge which had people partying on a Monday night until 1am. I could hear every word of their conversation. I was on the ground floor and the stairs to the upper rooms were some of the loudest stairs I have heard. I was awoken multiple times during the night by people coming and going. My room was also situated below a bathroom, and at approximately 7am I could hear someone on the toilet and then in the shower, almost as if I was in the room with them. The blinds that covered the window in the room could also not be closed further, thus light from the shisha bar across the road was brightening the whole room, as well as the sun as it rose in the morning. On to cleanliness, the miniature cushions on the bed had white stains on them. The mugs provided were filled with black debris and the base of the shower was similar. There was an excess of dust around the sink, which I noticed as I dropped my toothbrush as was met with a jungle of our grey delight. Overall I would not recommend this hotel.

On arrival I was greeted warmly by the new manager who was very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The first room I was shown was an upstairs double. After only a few minutes I knew this was not the room for me: It was very cramped, dated, required decoration and had lots of trailing multiple sockets and wires. As a solo female traveler I didn’t feel it was up to standard and I didn’t feel comfortable or safe. On returning downstairs to the bar area to explain, the manager could not have been more pleasant or helpful. She explained they had only just taken over the business that week and recognised its faults. She placed me in a really pleasant downstairs room just off the courtyard which was much better, more spacious and had been recently decorated. This room was good value for money as an upgrade (a double bed and a single with en-suite). I stayed two nights and was able to come and go as I pleased. The on site parking was a huge bonus! The premises are right in the heart of York so no need to use the car at all! Room service was available daily but I didn’t need it. The new owners have many improvement plans for this property eg redecorating, food to be offered, redeveloping of the courtyard, holiday huts and pizza restaurant. I would stay again in the room I was upgraded to - This venue will be great if the new owners carry out their plans … Definitely one to keep an eye on!
