We loved the character of the property. It is beautifully restored, and every room is different. The location is wonderful, with restaurants, sights and shops within an easy walk. The reception staff is terrific, with a dinner recommendation that suited our request perfectly. We were in room 6, which is on the top floor. It is charming with ancient wood beams, a cosy seating area, comfortable bed and a beautiful view. This didn’t bother us, but if you are tall, the beams are quite low and you will have to duck. Again, not a problem for us but for anyone with mobility issues, there are a lot of narrow stairs to navigate so perhaps a lower floor would be more suitable as there is no elevator.

The property is very convenient to the shops and restaurants near the canals in Leiden. Our room was on the first floor, easily accessed with an electronic key. Some street noise was bothersome in the evening. The staff was pleasant but there is no 24 hour reception, so you may have to call if no one is available. Our room was lovely and historic with a very modern bathroom. Overall a good choice for Leiden.

We found our room to be clean and the amenities generally good. The location of the hotel is fantastic. However, we had a couple of concerns, mainly to do with the security of the building. In order to get into and out of the building you have to either tap your key fob (to get in) or push a button (to get out), and this opens the automatic front door. The problem is that the door then remains open for about 30 seconds - and it's not possible to push it shut - so if the guests aren't being vigilant and standing/waiting by the door for 30 seconds to make sure no-one is trying to enter, then there's a big security concern. While we were there we saw a man trying to enter the building after we exited (he tried to squeeze past the door which was still open after we left.) When we brought this concern to the staff, they told us that every guest is told on checking in that they need to wait for the door to close, but we weren't told about this when we checked in. I wouldn't have felt safe staying in the hotel on my own for this reason. Another problem in the room is that there's a small step into the bathroom and both the step and the bathroom floor are very dark wood, so we both kept stubbing our toes on the step. We ended up having to place a sheet of white paper over the step so that we wouldn't keep tripping on it. The smell of the soaps in the bathroom was nasty, so we ended up buying our own bars of soap.

Excellent hotel

Everything about this hotel is exceptional. The room is very large and has a sofa also in it; the mattress is fantastic, the location is in the middle of the center of Leiden and the breakfast was very nice. I would definitely come back to this hotel on my next trip.

Great central location within walking distance of all main attractions. Really helpful and friendly staff. Pillows were a little hard and too big for us but that's more our personal preference,. The rooms are beautifully decorated and clean, would definitely recommend.
