If you’re in England I can’t imagine staying in a Holiday Inn on the outskirts of town when you could be in the heart of a 2,000 year old city, can cross the street and get an excellent meal or coffee, and see amazing architecture like the St Albans Abbey/Cathedral less than 200 metres from the door step of this historic 470 year old hotel that has seen it all and dripping in character and charm. It was about the hottest day of the year at 35 degrees but the staff had a fan going and I had two windows to open up. Whoever owns it cares about doing upgrades properly and if that British standard can continue the world will be better for it. I only wish I had been staying longer.

What a fabulous friendly welcoming hotel. The receptionist who checked us in was very friendly and helpful. When we had breakfast, we were also impressed with how efficient and friendly the server was. Will definitely return.

The room was OK, but not what I expected from previous stays. Because the shower door was stuck, we got a much better room, why were we not given that room in the first place!? The heater in the room was great. The second day the show only had lukewarm water. I mentioned this and it was fixed, but this was too late. The bar had no licence considering there were many of us staying, the must have lost a lot of money which would have been spent on food and drinks.

Excellent location, for the city and train station. The hotel was comfortable with good food. Parking was a little tight. The stairs inside the hotel are a little narrow if you are less able (understandable in such an old building)
