Skellig Michael is an island off the coast of Portmagee, made famous recently as a filming location in the newest Star Wars trilogy. This sea crag rises 700 feet above the Atlantic and is home to a series of monastic beehive huts that housed Christian monks from the 7th to 12th centuries. Almost entirely cut off from civilization, it’s amazing to think what life must have been like for the hermit monks that inhabited this island a thousand years ago. #History

A view of Skellig Michael off the southern coast of Ireland, made famous recently as a filming location in the newest Star Wars trilogy. This sea crag rises 700 feet above the Atlantic and is swarming with puffins. At the top is a series of monastic beehive huts. The island is only accessible by boat during summer months. If you want to do a boat landing to explore the island, be sure to book your tour several months in advance, as it sells out quickly. It's a place to bring a picnic and explore the #GreatOutdoors.

Greater Skellig (Michael) has the ruins of a 6th century monastery whilst Lesser Skellig is home to one of the largest gannet colonies. Only a few landing trips take place each day, be sure to book well in advance if you want to climb the steps.
