Dieser Gedenkstein soll alle anderen früher in Schönheide aufgestellten Erinnerungstätten an Opfer des nationalsozialistischen Terrors ersetzen. So gab es am Rathaus ein an den Schönheider Arbeiter und Kommunisten Rudi Radecker (geboren 24. Oktober 1914) erinnerndes Mahnmal. Er wurde 1942 zum Tode verurteilt und hingerichtet. Auf dem alten Friedhof stand ein Denkmal für die Opfer der Todesmärsche im April 1945. Mitte April 1945 wurden vor dem Vorrücken der US-amerikanischen Truppen Insassen von Außenlagern des Konzentrationslagers Flossenbürg (die es auch in Legenfeld und Schönheide gab) in Richtung Tschechoslowakei getrieben. Dabei wurden erschöpfte Menschen erschossen. Auf dem alten Friedhof in Schönheide wurden über 30 dieser Opfer bestattet.
