One of the increasingly rare number of hotels that retain some character of a bygone age of hospitality. An original Victorian spa hotel used by royalty and the aristocracy of the period it has a lot of old charm about it.
I tried a couple of the more expensive rooms (though the rates are very reasonable) and they were very comfortable, extremely quiet and nicely warm in the cold weather.
I only had breakfast, and it was the typical fare and well prepared. An impressive Art Deco dining room!
The staff were extremely pleasant, helpful and efficient.
The hotel is renowned for its isolated location in the Shap Fells, but, in reality, it is only a stone's throw from the main M6 motorway and the old A6 road.
Well worth a visit to recall the style of hotels as they used to be but not lacking modern comforts.
Also "hats off" to the owners for looking after a colony of red squirrels which only exist, as far as England is concerned, in the Northern counties due to the dedicated work of volunteers controlling the invasive grey squirrel.
