La forteresse d'origine fut brûlée et rasée par Louis XI en 1455, pour punir Pierre d'Ambroise de s'être révolté contre le pouvoir royal. Jacques Donatien le Ray, fils d’un gros bourgeois de Nantes achète le château en 1750. Il y donnait des fêtes populaires, ce qui préserva le château lors de la Révolution de 1789. Il reçoit Benjamin Franklin, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Son fils, part pour le Nouveau Monde pour y fonder une colonie dans l'Ohio, du nom de Chaumont.
