Not as we had hoped unfortunately. We drove 3.5 hours to come and visit Highclere Castle for my partner’s birthday treat. I read the reviews and thought it would be great place stay. Starting on arrival we were informed that to swim would be an extra £20 for us both, not something we have experienced before with hotels with pools, so didn't think to check terms and conditions before booking, and for £210 per night excluding breakfast, a reasonable person would have expected this would be included, out of annoyance we didn't use the swimming pool, but still had it added to the bill, although it was removed when asked. The main frustration however was the fire alarm going off at 0615 from a smoke alarm set off from steam in another room, which left us tired for the day at Highclere, so not a restful time away unfortunately. On the plus, the staff were all friendly and professional, and breakfast was good.

Lovely location. Super lovely staff. Great buffet breakfast. Rooms are beige but nice. Bathrooms in good condition. Lots of space. Quiet AC. Lots of storage. Big downside was the bed. Lumpy and uncomfortable. A shame because everything else was more than adequate.

Great hotel although looking a bit tired now!

I have stayed at this hotel many times as it has an excellent Spa/Pool facility and is one of the best hotels in the area. But hotel is looking very tired now. Rooms seem dated and dark, mattresses was gone, and general cleanliness around the hotel could do with improvement. The changing rooms and showers in spa area could do with a good regular clean and scrub during the days. I felt that the £25 per hour late check out was a bit extortionate especially as other lesser hotels can give you and an hour or two complimentary subject to availability.

Buyer Beware

Really liked the place but it let itself down in the details. My daughter had milk split over her at breakfast by a staff member, waiter apologised and then disappeared. No one came to clear up the milk nor sort out my daughter's milk covered clothes. I went to explain at the front desk and asked for help as we were travelling for a few days "there's a DIY laundry in town...." Really! We had 5 treatments and they billed us for 10, luckily my son had smelt a rat and picked them up on it when we checked out, nearly £300 over charge removed... None of this leave a good taste which is a shame as the facilities are good, clean and the pool staff are very helpful. Would be nervous to go back as I just want to relax and trust the people who are looking after us.

We were thoroughly enjoying our stay until the final morning,my Wife picked up a single sheet of paper which turned out to be our bill,it had been folded with the type facing outwards so she saw the final tariff,this was extremely upsetting as he trip had been a surprise for her and I did not wish for her to know he cost.When I went down to pay I explained this to the Gentleman on reception and said I had no problem with the bill being posted to me but I found it extremely unprofessional that the bill hadn’t even been put in an envelope addressed to me,he clearly wasn’t paying attention as his reply was” yeah,that’s alright “, I replied that it clearly wasn’t alright and explained myself again to which he replied ok I will tell someone,to the best of my memory I can’t recall any form of apology.To be fair this was the only minus to our stay but the total lack f professionalism did leave somewhat of a bad sate.

Rooms are dated, stains on curtains, no fridge in the room, lightbulbs flickering, poor tv choices, carpet had warn holes. Restaurant was overpriced £20 for a cheeseburger. Menu was minimal and breakfast choices were limited. Spa was an extra charge of £10 per person. Happened to be in there during aqua aerobics where the speaker was dreadful and unpleasant to be in and the sauna was dirty.
