Photo "Autun (Saône-et-Loire) Le théâtre romain. Il a été construit dans la seconde moitié du Ier siècle. C'est le plus grand théâtre connu de toute la Gaule et l'un des plus grand du monde romain (Il fait 148 m, celui de Pompée à Rome fait 150 m). Il pouvait contenir de 10 000 à 15 000 personnes. Le théâtre est adossé à la colline qui fait face à la rivière l'Arroux, ce qui facilite la construction. Le mur de scène (Scaenae frons), opposé aux gradins, et qui a disparu avec la scène, occultait la vue vers le plan d'eau qui d'ailleurs n'existait pas à l'époque. En bas (dans l’orchestra), s’asseyaient les "notables" (sénateurs, chevaliers, etc). Ensuite dans la cavea (l'ensemble des gradins), les différents niveaux, séparés par des paliers, accueillaient les spectateurs en fonction de leur rang. Les gradins du bas (qui ont été restaurés) accueillaient les citoyens romains, la deuxième rangée (moins bien conservée) accueillait la plèbe, le dernier étage (disparu, qui atteignait la cime des arbres) accueillait les esclaves et les étrangers. L'évacuation des gradins pouvait se faire par des sortes de tunnels: les vomitoires (Vomitoriae). Des fragments de colonnes disséminés appartenaient peut être au "Columnatio", colonnade agrémentant les côtés de la scène.
