I would highly recommend Villa Puolo. The staff was outstanding! Enzo cooked for us one night and it was fabulous! Gessica helped us with taxis and our every need and Maria and Asunti treated us like family. There is a small marina right down the hill with cute restaurants, including La Taverna, which was a highlight.

We stayed here in April 2025 and absolutely loved it! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, providing us with anything we needed. They also provided excellent recommendations for walking around the city, including some sites to see and dining options in the area. The rooms are quiet, comfortable and include everything you might need. Be warned as they are true caves, there is little to no ventilation though it creates perfect sleeping temperatures as you don't have the sun baking in your windows. We absolutely cannot wait to stay here again!

Cannot recommend this hotel enough. Our room in a cave was unique and beautiful. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We did a private wine tasting which included wines made at their winery and a lot of good local history; their sister restaurant also was great for dinner. The location is perfect, easily walkable to the entirety of Matera.

Excellent property and location. The experience of the cave room was different and fun. The hotel coordinated with a parking garage our car and even used it in the middle of our stay drive to Gravina and Albarobello. Beautifully stylish and unique rooms from the converted caves of Matera. Every detail has been thought of and taken care of. The robes are fluffy, the towels were beautiful quality and the bed was sublimely comfortable. `even the wine supplied in the room which is the winery’s own is delicious. `thoroughly recommend.

Immersed in history and luxury

Great location . We stayed in the family room / cave which was great for three of us … a short stroll to breakfast and right in the heart of Matera . The glass of wine on arrival was wonderful ( we ended up buying bottles to take with us ). The walk into the canyon / over the swing bridge and up the other side was steep but worth the view .
