Photo "Somerset Levels : Lower Burrow and flooding on West Moor View from the top of Burrow Hill Looking north. The houses in the foreground are at Lower Burrow at the foot of the hill. The flooded fields are on West Moor and the two lines of light coloured reeds mark the line of the main drain of the moor. This drains the moor to the pump house at ST41712353, just out of picture at top left, where the water is pumped up into the River Parret. The river has high embankments and the levels of the river are usually well above that of the moor at this time of the year. The moors are allowed to flood to prevent excessive flood damage to Langport 3km downstream. The houses on the right in the middle distance are at Thorney ST427226 and the church in the centre in the middle distance is at Muchelney Abbey ST429249. The "-ney" ending to a place name on the Levels signifies an island and Thorney and Muchelney are on slightly higher ground that historically saved them from flooding. Langport is in the centre distance and the factories and industrial units on the south side of the town can be seen in the sun in the left distance. The hills in the far distance are the Polden Hills, a low ridge south of, and parallel to the Mendips" by Nigel Mykura (Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0) / Cropped from original
