Excellent staff. Within easy walking distance of Retiro, Prada, Reina Sofia and the Thyssen. Many dining options nearby. Hotel is in a very upscale neighborhood.

This is an excellent hotel in the best part of Madrid. Highly recommended. One knows what to expect in a 5 star hotel and the Wellington ticks all those boxes - fluffy towels, comfortable bed, excellent gym facilities and the like. The reason I keep coming back to the Wellington though is that it is emblematic of everything that is wonderful about Madrid. The hotel is decorated with Spanish art and the rooms have antique engravings in them. The staff in the hotel will address you formally but also with a warmth and friendliness that is hard to find in other hotels and even in other cities. There is a wonderful lounge next to reception area where you can relax over a drink and watch the old world of Madrid roll by. If you are fortunate you may see some bullfighters return from the ring. The location is the best in Madrid as Barrio Salamanca is very beautiful but an area in which people live as opposed to a tourist park. The quality of the restaurants in the area reflect this. And then you have the Retiro to walk all those extra kilos off. Wonderful.
