A flock of horned larks in a snowy field. These hearty Winter birds are always fun to watch. They are one of the few winter birds that have color and interesting patterns. At certain times you can see the feather horns on their heads which is where they the name.

Long Hollow Scenic Overlook provides a nice driving break just off of Hwy 20. Beautiful rolling hills make up the Northwest Illinois countryside just east of Galena.

I found this large black rat snake sunning on a rock in the hill prairie so I placed it on a tree stump for a few photos. These are very gentle mild mannered snakes that grow to lengths of 6 feet or more.

Another shot of a male Indigo Bunting eyeballing a couple of tasty insects. I probably spent 3 hours waiting for these males to land in the flowers so I could get some shots that showed off the amazing colors.
