Four days of pure luxury. We upgraded to the Europa suite and it was the most magical venue for Christmas. We enjoyed a magnificent Christmas lunch, delicious breakfasts and wonderful room service meals. The staff were absolutely phenomenal. We really don’t have enough superlatives for our stay at the Fontenay. Worth every penny!

I loved this hotel and everything about it. Especially the service minded staff that really treated us well while being personal. The only downside was the pool that was rather cold to swim in - after all they have a nice outdoor area (which obviously must cool the water). All in all, a true five star experience.

Reception was excellent, even escorting us to our room. The room was a good and included a balcony. We appreciated the welcome gifts, and the turndown evening service which seems from a bygone era! We are nitpicking but were frustrated eggs and bacon were hard unless specifically asked for different. Position on the lake was perfect.

Beautiful modern hotel in arguably the best residential area in Hamburg , right on the Alster lake. Fantastic choice at breakfast , hot dishes are prepared in the kitchen and delivered to your table piping hot which is not always the case with a buffet. Freshly made carrot and apple juice. Amazing high tech hotel!

Overall the hotel property was excellent! The rooms were spacious and very modern -incorporating best of class technology for room controls. The service for the restaurant could be improved - as we felt the waiters were not well versed with the menu and might not be as trained. We didn’t understand what the purpose of the bar at the atrium when the waiters still had to go to the rooftop bar to get drinks. Our toilet rolls were replaced when the rooms are serviced which felt unnecessary. Loved the spa which was great for rewinding after the 2 weeks road trip we just did.

What set this experience and hotel apart from the rest, is the attention to detail in each step of our stay, from the hospitality of the team to the polished atmosphere and delicious bites. Everyone has been so welcoming however a special highlight to Lukas Sarnow. He has been so above and beyond and every second of our stay. He is the embodiment of GREAT HOSPITALITY. His patience, his attitude, his knowledge, his gentle manner have been a delight. If you are planning a trip to Hamburg you should definitely consider The Fontenay.

If you just need a place to sleep at and nothing else, this is a 5* hotel. The room is the best I ever had. If you want more than a sleeping place, and a full 5* hotel with proper Spa and Gym and the service with it, the Fontenay is sadly a disappointment. My experience might be heavily personal but I still think it speaks enough about the hotel in itself. We were there with my girlfriend for 5 days, and the sauna was broken the entire duration of our stay. I understand that those things can happen but the explanations we got changed from one person to another, which just made it seemed that they had not idea what was going on, and did not bother hurrying up to fix it. Their compensation was a champagne bottle that we had to send back since my girlfriend is pregnant and cannot drink alcohol. That was all the hotel did for us, and probably for the other complaining guests, so you can understand why I feel the Fontenay is not worth 5*. The gym is also too small, it is probably half the size of one of their room and is simply lacking equipment for those who want more than just running on a treadmill. It is a shame because the hotel is beautiful inside and the rooms are incredible, but it does not compensate its other weaknesses.
