Not so much a boutique hotel as a better-than-average cheapie. Many rooms are windowless (not unusual for Malaysia) and the place is basically a reasonably well kept low-rise guesthouse, part of the multi-year gentrifaction of central George Town. Good in terms of nearby eating options and walkability.

Pros: The location and the historical building are great, the reception is very helpful and amazing! Our room to the inner courtyard was very pleasant. Cons: The towels didn't seem to be fresh. The mosque prayer nearby wakes up every morning. The breakfast is one of the worst I had: limited selection of plain rice, pasta, sausage, fried eggs, bread and jam, a fruit type that gets eaten by others fast. Dirty cups, coffee terrible, staff hardly understands English.

Great stay in this historic property, conveniently located in the heart of the George Town UNESCO district, mere steps away from the nearest phenomenal restaurant. The bathroom was OK, and our towels were a bit musty to begin with (but were replaced upon request). However, the beds were super comfortable. We appreciated the daily bottled water and the breakfasts. The morning staff was wonderfully friendly and helpful with suggestions and offers to call taxis; the afternoon/evening staff a little less so. Be aware that the proximity to the nearby Kapitan Keling Mosque meant for some loud mornings and late evenings. The broadcasts on the minaret's loud speakers went way beyond the typical two-minute call to prayer five times a day. Some hours, it seemed more like the imam was preaching long sermons over the speakers which made sleep sometimes tricky. Overall, we liked this place, and would stay here again.
