Beautiful Country House Hotel

Lovely stay in this beautiful country house hotel. Even though there is currently some refurbishment work taking place, we had a great time. Friendly staff and a comfortable, clean and spacious room.

No complaints.

I thought it was ok, warm and clean in the room we were given. Currently no food option, but plenty of options locally.

Our room was adorable and we quite enjoyed it. We could’ve used better pillows. The staff is wonderful, the inside was just beautiful. The outside looks neglected and looks like it fell on hard times. With a little sprucing up it could be spectacular.

Do Not Stay Here

A hotel is meant to provide food. This one does not, no bar. The place was deserted. Got an email saying the kitchen had closed, permanently. There is some building works going on. Place desperately needs refurbishing and should be closed for that. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in on this website. Tatty notes with a number to ring on arrival. Place was deserted.

Being refurbished, no restaurant. No breakfast

Being refurbished, so no restaurant. We only found out when we checked in. We were directed to an external restaurant a few minutes away, but that place only opened early during the week. Room (no.7) was large and contained furniture from all eras; including a bedside lamp that was impossible to plug in! Bed was firm, but comfortable. En suite was showing the lack of decent maintenance.

In it's day it would have been a beautiful building, but is declining fast. Very dirty, room, old bedding and towels. Smell of damp in room and bathroom. Needs a huge input of money to bring it back up to a minimum standard and sincerely hope that the owners do to preserve e what could be a stunning building.

Poor quality.

I booked for 4 nights only stayed for 1. That should tell you all about this hotel. Uncomfortable and unkept. Customer service was poor on the day/night and hasn’t improved.

Haven't stayed in this hotel for over 5 years, which at that time was looking a little run down. Pleasantly surprised that certain redecoration had been conducted in the meantime. Stayed this time in room 27 which is a family room and was enormous, although somewhat spartan ie no pictures on the wall, no clock alarm, telephone etc. Breakfast pretty good for the price. A large amount of the surrounding land has been sold off for residential development and the swimming pool/spa closed. Restaurant in the evening closed and with very little alternative choice locally.

Communication and condition needs attention

The property looks nice, though it needs updating. The roof was leaking during my stay in my room, I had to move furniture around and put a bin down to catch leak! I told them about this, though they did not seem fussed and were not interested to see how this affected my stay.

Spam Hotel Was shut down and took our money!

The hotel was closed and i was left stranded then out of pocket. You sent emails on tuesday saying you were room only as the bar and restaurant was shut and then on wed. I arrived on friday for the two room for 2 nights and found the hotel completely shut and stripped out. You had windows fitted so whilst you sent an email tuesday your hotel must have been shut for a while. My friend and i had drove 4 jours and were stranded. Ther was no reception left and no one answering. We ended up having to pay for another hotel which cost us much more on top of what we had already paid for Risley Hall.

Have stayed in this hotel several times over the past say 20 years. This time I was in room 8. The receptionist upon arrival advised that the bathroom light continued to flicker, but was unable to identify the fault (I suspect it just needed a new bulb as a compact fluorescent light usually has a capacitor built into the bulb). In addition the TV did not work due to a lack of signal and no hair dryer. Breakfast was fine. However the whole hotel needs a complete refurbishment, notwithstanding that the ownership has generated funds from selling peripheral land for housing/nursing home and needs to reinvest.

The bed was comfortable and the room rate was cheap - the only positives in a very disappointing stay. This hotel is desperately in need of renovation. It's dilapidated and dated. The first room I was offered was very hot and smelled damp. The alternative was equally hot and the window only opened a few inches at the top so it was impossible to get any cool air in. There was dust everywhere including on the electric fan. The carpet hadn't been vacuumed. This is the first time I've ever posted a negative review!

Great potential but as is - it is disappointing

This place has such a potential but it feels that it is mismanaged which is a great shame. Stayed here more than three times and each visit seems to be worse.. I don’t mind older decor but wonky headboards, showers not having enough water pressure (2nd floor room), unable to open windows, dirty hallways, reception staff not always available, some rooms need a better clean, no drinking water in the room etc I’m now treating this as a complete last resort when I stay in the area. I can’t believe that this place is run like this in 2023 Only if some TLC was given and customer journeys improved it would get more business travelers and could charge between £85-£105 per night.

Not the best...

Tired and a bit run down, not enough staff, nothing open bar etc. Battery smoke detector in the room had a flat battery so it beeped loudly every 30 seconds... took it off the wall and gave it to reception. Arrived at night car park was pitch black as it had no lighting, and we had to go looking for the breakfast room as there is no signage and no info given at check-in overall pretty poor as there are no facilities at all at this hotel only positive is it is very cheap guess you get what ypu pay for!!

Most of hotel was shut for refurbishment -no bar -no breakfast -no restaurant -no other facilities other than room only -which was NOT what we paid for . Bathroom recently refurbished was excellent -but bedroom lacked central heating and no plug sockets for bedside light- main light fittings in bedroom damaged and mismatched bulbs. Wallpaper hanging off wall in bedroom. Only one member of staff in reception sometimes and she stated Expedia should have told us -Expedia did not know apparently. No member of staff on duty when we checked out either. Requested Expedia chase up and ask for refund /or partial refund .

Not a hotel - read the recent reviews! At best, a room to stay with no services, and under construction. We stayed several nights at the Risley while visiting family as it was a convenient location, and this is about all that was positive about the experience. A day before the reservation started, we got an email saying the hotel was under construction and there were no services - too late to cancel or rebook elsewhere. We arrived after 10 to an empty building with a sign to a phone number to call, which was not answered. After walking through creepy hallways of side buildings, we finally found someone and got checked in. The next morning, we were woken by construction workers directly across the hall - we were literally the ONLY guests on this property, and construction was literally ONLY going on outside our door. About two hours later, the staff knocked on our door to give payment, with no regards for "sorry about the noise." The next morning, we were woken by a screeching fire alarm. Again, no apologies or recognition from staff. After that, our expectations were quite low, and we were just happy to sleep. The property might be nice after renovations, but - in the interim - do not stay here if you are expecting a hotel.
