The host was very welcoming. It was nice to experience this historic motel. The rooms are comfortable and it was convenient to have a kitchen. The hotel provided a light breakfast with a sunny deck to enjoy the morning.
The property is from 1937. Rooms are very small but perfect for an overnight trip. Very cute and quaint, lots of history behind these cabins. Breakfast is just muffins, yogurt. Staff were knowledgeable and explained the history
The most adorable place to stay. Walkable to everything you need in Custer. Super easy check in and out. Would totally stay again when coming through the area.
Wonderful small motel with cute, though small, cabins. So much more character than other places. Inn keeper was super friendly making sure w has what we needed. Would stay there again if I’m in Custer again.
The check-in was fast and smooth, and the staff was pleasant, friendly, and social. This is an older motel with so much charm—I’m sure many people have made lifelong memories here! Our room was small but fit our needs perfectly.
The town was an easy walk away, with a few restaurants, shops, and bars. Mount Rushmore was only about 30 minutes away, making this a perfect little stay for seeing the sights.
If you don’t appreciate older, charming motels, this probably isn’t the place for you—but honestly, that would be your loss!
I loved this place. Very unique and perfect for me. I wouldn’t say quirky, but I seek out places that have character. The staff was very helpful with area questions, as well. Do much better than a hotel!!!!
This is the only place I stay in Custer, with over 10 years of traveling there for art shows. The Chalet is a historic motel with charming, very clean rooms. This is a safe, healthy and refreshing stay. Only a few steps to a local favorite coffee shop, the Mickelson Trail and downtown. Rooms are quiet and comfortable.
My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary trip. We trailered or motorcycle into town and she was extremely accommodating with us needing a little extra space for our SUV, trailer, and motorcycle. I was expecting the house to be much smaller than it was but it was absolutely perfect for what we needed! We will definitely stay again if we come back to Custer!
We were pleasantly surprised by this motel. The staff were friendly and very accommodating. We felt very comfortable here and loved the cozy, charming feel of the property. The room was spotless with some very well thought out perks. The separate bedroom for a double queen room was an added delight for us who travel with kids. Travel guides were provided as was a fireplace in the room. The information sheet included in the room listed several recommendations for food, drinks or sightseeing while in the area.
These little chalets were fabulous! Clean, comfortable and a great continental breakfast was in the room!

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
We stayed here for five nights on our trip to the Black Hills. Custer is, in my opinion, the best base for exploration. We love the town and it’s easy to get to all the sights.
As for the motel, we were overall very satisfied. The staff is friendly, the property is convenient and clean, and it was no-hassle with our pups. The grab and go breakfast was a nice touch. It’s really quite cute outside and there’s a Dollar General next door should you need anything.
The only downsides for us were that the rooms are soooo small. The bathroom is tiny. The door to our second bedroom couldn’t close because of the bed. It was just extremely tight and after nearly a week, we were feeling a bit cramped. The furnishings are extremely old, worn, and dated, as well.
Overall, we’d definitely stay here again and recommend anyone do the same - the pros outweigh the cons. I’m not sure we’d be up for 5 nights again, but wouldn’t hesitate to book it for a short stay.
