Good staff but difficulty communicating

The room was smoke free and pretty clean. I did find it a bit warm and difficult to turn the thermostat down. The staff were warm, attentive and friendly and would go out of their way just to come to my door and ask if I needed things. Hereโ€™s the problem: the hotel advertises itself as having English language service, and in truth this service was very limited. I chose this hotel because it was a USA based hotel chain that advertised English service. I had difficulty communicating with most staff, both of us using translator apps that did not always communicate the right thing. Even ordering room service off their own menu was a headache. A few times it seemed more senior staff had to be pulled away from other duties to help me which I felt guilty about. I donโ€™t expect ALL staff at a hotel in China to have fluent or stronger working English but I was surprised so few did. Worse, because as a foreign tourist I did not have a Chinese phone number, the staff wanted my Chinese friendโ€™s number, and asked for her to translate. She was not staying with me the whole time and this was not an option, plus it was a burden on her.

check in staff is too busy with her work giving no interactions with guest that makes feel unfriendly and impersonal, concierge staff pretty helpful on the other hand. I like the room setting though.
