Photo "The site of Gresham Castle The island of trees seen across the field conceals the remains of a fortified manor house: Gresham Castle is believed to be of similar shape as the neighbouring Baconsthorpe Castle. A licence to crenellate was granted to Sir Edmund Bacon in 1319. Before that time, a castle of the De Stuteville family stood here. It was captured and looted in 1450 by Lord Moleyns. Large timbers, presumed to be what remained of a drawbridge, an entrance to a passage, and the keel of a boat were discovered in 1846 when the surrounding moat was cleaned out. Presently the site, a Grade 2 listed building, is overgrown with brambles, nettles and trees, and nothing much of the original structure remains.
