  • The Criterion in downtown Bar Harbor, Maine, does not look very much from the exterior, but it is a glorious, well-preserved Art Deco style theatre. Opening in 1932, it has served the town of Bar Harbor as a movie palace ever since, accomodating such prominent families as the Rockefellers on their vacations to nearby Mount Desert Island. Kept in fantastic condition over the years, the theatre still has most of its original interior: seats, curtains, and even the original lighting board for stage performances. Breakfast was more than enough! It was so cozy and peaceful in the restaurant, we could wake up slow and prepare for our daily adventures. Parking is underneath the hotel which made it super easy to get rolling at 6am after a snowstorm. Also the elevator for parking headed right up to our floor, avoiding a transfer thru another area. Fantastic hotel, and great mid winter stay!

The room was very clean. The staff were all very welcoming and kind. The restaurant had amazing food and service. This was the coziest hotel. They also have fresh cookies, tea and coffee in the lobby every day. I would love to stay here again. Easy walk to everything you would want to do in Bar Harbor.
