Excellent budget hotel in the heart of Baku with simple yet comfortable rooms. Like many hotels in Azerbaijan you have to deal with Soviet Era plumbing and occasionally-clogged shower drains, but this hotel is fairly well-kept and the staff will come fix things for you. My only complaint was that the WiFi was down for half a day while I was trying to do work, but they got it working by the early afternoon. The manager is also very helpful and, if you have a late flight, you can do an evening check out for a fee, provided that your room isn’t booked by somebody else for that evening. As for location, it is a 20-30 minute walk maximum (or a 10-minute car ride) to most sites of interest, e.g., Targova(ya) a.k.a. Nizami Street is about a 20-minute walk. The Old City (İcərişəhər) is about 30 minutes on foot. The best part of the stay is the AMAZING breakfast buffet on the top floor and the large windows with a view of Baku and the Caspian Sea below. The breakfast consists of staples of Azerbaijani breakfast (such as pomidor yumurta) and some small variations each day. (I recommend any of the egg dishes, and the “breakfast pizza” when available.) Azerbaijani tea is served “Russian-style” with a concentrate to be mixed with hot water. The coffee is also good. The restaurant staff is exceptionally nice and helpful as well. This is definitely the best budget hotel near the city centre.

The staff and receptionist were very friendly and nice, very polite and willing to help at any moment. The location is also very convenient, there’s everything you need around. The rooms themselves are a bit old, but still there was everything needed, including air conditioning. Thank you Baku!

Although the room was clean, there was a very bad smell in the room. And it didn’t disappear even though i left open the window all day. Air condition in the room was not working. The bed was very nice uncomfortable and noisy. Breakfast was also not good, the food was not fresh. In summary, the hotel was clean, but I don’t recommend to check other hotels first

Would not book it again.

We stayed here 10 days. But would not stay here again. The only positive thing was that it was close the main shopping street. About 15 minutes. -Worst of all was the breakfast. It was so cheap. Everything is like half empty and you have to ask the staff to refill several times. It’s like 1 sliced tomato on the table for 30 guests, and when it’s finished. They bring a new tomato. - The WiFi was OK but sometimes really slow. -The reception is also a little rude. The don’t even say hello to you. And there is always strange people just hanging there. -Be aware of the hotel laundry. It took 3 days to get the clothes instead of 1 day as promised. They also charged about 50 dollar for a bag of clothes with mainly t-shirts and socks. -Be aware of the closest grocery on the left after you exit the building. He charged our family the double price many times and and often ”forgot” to give back some money. When confronted he said it was a ”mistake”. Overall. You get exactly what you pay for. But would not book it again.

Solid mid-level hotel

The Diplomat Hotel is a nice mid-level hotel without pretensions. A solid basic stay with service minded and friendly staff. We asked to change our room from the back the front of the hotel and it was accommodated without argument.
