  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

I've enjoyed my time at Relax Inn. The staff were always nice and accommodating. I felt the room was clean, comfortable and quiet which is important as a night shift ER nurse who sleeps during the day. There are plenty of restaurants nearby.

I come in to Albany for work and it has been nice being able to have a quiet, affordable and clean place to stay. The staff have always been really nice and accommodating as I work at night and really appreciate being able to get in to a room as soon as possible to get a few more hours of sleep after driving in to town. Was worried when I pulled in the building was very run down the pool had been drained and the office area had no ac. Once we got checked in to our room I was pleasantly surprised. I booked a double room and ended up with a single king but it was okay. The room was clean linens fresh and no bugs in sight.

The staff is rude and unprofessional (The Indian lady) the front area where she was located smelled like weed. Had someone to break into my vehicle she acted as if she could care less. Housekeeping don’t clean the rooms and won’t leave towels in the rooms, you have to ask for them. Asked to be moved and she refused, please do not patronize this business.

Hotel wasn't bad but the pricevwas jacked up to 75.01. She said there wasnt a reservation in my name. Lady was a bit rude. But bed was nice. Room was very nice for its rating.

I have stayed here quite a few times already for my job. The quality of the room for the price is difficult to beat. The bed is comfortable and clean with noticeably clean linen. I've seen rooms in other places with obvious signs that the beds were not freshly made. The shower has a good amount of water pressure which isn't always true in many places. The staff has always been nice and flexible.
